Final Steps
Thank you for completing the New Gator Checklist! Please complete the following final steps to prepare for your graduate coursework.
Our offices will be closed December 23 - January 2; please begin these steps as soon as possible to avoid a late-registration fee of $100.
- Important Note On Technology
Please note, in order to succeed in this asynchronous online program, you will need access to a consistent internet connection and a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam running a modern version of Windows or macOS. You'll also need an updated and secure internet browser like Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox. Some UF services will only work on specific browsers. A mobile device with a camera or a dedicated video recording device may also prove useful for documenting your creative assignments and work.
As always, if you have any tech issues, including issues with obtaining, installing, or updating required software, please contact the Computing Help Desk 24/7 and be sure to have your 8-digit UFID ready if calling.

Satisfying Your Prerequisite
The following information outlines how to satisfy your prerequisite. Please note arts in public health requirements are different. Your prerequisite must be satisfied at least two weeks before the start of classes.
- Creating for the Health of It (Online)
The Creating for the Health of It (CFHI) online professional development course provides an introduction to the field of arts in health. This 20-hour course is self-paced. Please read every bullet point below BEFORE enrolling.
- When asked about having a GatorLink, click yes. You MUST use a Gatorlink account to enroll.
- CFHI will appear on your Canvas dashboard immediately after registering. You can get started right away.
- You must complete this prerequisite at least three weeks before the start of classes.
- Please click here to enroll. Do NOT share this link with anyone.
CFHI is our most accessible prerequisite option. Please contact camadmissions@arts.ufl.edu if you have any concerns about satisfying your prerequisite.
- Arts in Public Health Prerequisite
GC in Arts in Public Health students must satisfy one of the following prerequisites to finalize admission to our program.
- MPH: Have completed or be currently enrolled in a Master's of Public Health program
- Public Health Course: Complete one graduate-level public health course before beginning our program or during the first semester. This can be done during the Summer C or Fall term. To take a public health course at UF, online, please contact Telisha Martin
(martints@phhp.ufl.edu) using your newly created UF GatorMail email to request a list of options and register for a course at least three weeks before the start of your preferred term.
New Student Orientation
If you complete your New Gator Checklist before December 22, then we should be able to add you to Graduate Central before the holiday closure. Grad Central is our student resource platform on Canvas. You should begin and complete the new student orientation at your earliest convenience. You can access this platform by visiting https://elearning.ufl.edu/. If you are unable to complete your New Gator Checklist before December 22, we will add you to this resource on January 3 upon our return. In the meantime, please enroll in Creating for the Health of It so you can complete the modules before January 6.
- How to Access Graduate Central
When you log in to Canvas, you’ll see a "course" called Graduate Central: Arts in Medicine on your dashboard and in your courses menu.
- Click to navigate to Graduate Central. This resource will be available to you throughout your entire time in the program as a virtual student commons.
- Once inside Graduate Central, click the Start Here rectangle near the top of the home page.
- Read the contents of the Start Here module and then complete the New Student Orientation module.
Course Registration
Your advisor will assist you with course registration. Many of our courses are available for self-registration, however, some core-curriculum courses may require departmental registration. Your advisor, Phillip J. Herr-Klepacki, will email you with specific instructions once registration is open. Any courses you register for will typically appear on your Canvas dashboard the week before the start of classes.

- Textbooks & Materials
After you register for courses you can log in to Canvas (https://elearning.ufl.edu/) to access each course and view your course materials, including syllabi. Please be sure to download your syllabi soon as possible; syllabi contain important information about what books and materials you'll need for the course. You can order your textbooks online through your preferred book store, or through the Florida Bookstore online. If your course is not yet available on Canvas, you may visit the syllabi database to view historical, current, and future syllabi at https://arts.ufl.edu/syllabi/ (be sure to filter by the proper semester before searching).
(Optional) Instructions for the Florida Bookstore:
- Florida Gators Textbooks | New, Used, Rental and Digital Textbooks (bkstr.com)
- Select "University of Florida" as your program
- Select HUM as your department (or the appropriate three-letter prefix for your course number)
- Select your four-digit course number
- Select your section number (this will be provided to you by your academic advisor when registration opens)
Repeat this process for any additional courses you are taking and then click "Find Materials." Again, you may purchase or rent your books directly through this store or shop around for a better price on the internet.
New Academic Year Convocation
About two weeks before the start of classes in August, all currently active students will receive an Outlook calendar invitation to their GatorMail to attend our online new academic year convocation. The convocation will be live on Zoom and a recording will be made available on Graduate Central in case you are unable to attend. Convocation typically takes place during the first or second week of classes in August. Students who begin in January will join us for the convocation in August.
