School of Music 90th Anniversary

Clarinet Ensemble
Professor Mitchell Estrin, director

The University of Florida Clarinet Ensemble is comprised of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Florida School of Music and is directed by UF Professor of Clarinet, Mitchell Estrin. Established in 1999, the ensemble has performed in concert throughout the United States and Europe. A fully-balanced clarinet choir, the ensemble has performed on ten occasions at the Vandoren Clarinet Ensemble Festival in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, East Lansing, Champaign-Urbana, Mobile, Greensboro and Rochester. The ensemble has performed feature recitals at the International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest in Kansas City, Washington D.C. and Atlanta.

Recent highlights include performances at Michigan State University, the University of Illinois, and a concert tour of Germany and France. The choir has performed for the University of Florida 150th Anniversary Celebration, Society of Composers Region IV Annual Conference, University of West Florida, Florida Music Educators Association Annual Conference, Walt Disney World and in many local public schools. The ensemble has performed fundraisers for several non-profit organizations including the Ronald McDonald House and the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The University of Florida Clarinet Ensemble performs a wide variety of repertoire that spans from the standard literature for clarinet choir to contemporary premieres of new arrangements and commissioned works by Paul Basler, Anthony Brackett, Russell Brown, Daniel Coe, Michael Deall, Matt Johnston, Chan Ji Kim, Thomas Nelly, Paul Richards, Kyle Rowan, James Paul Sain, Chris Sharp and Matthew Sexton. The ensemble has recorded and released four critically acclaimed CD recordings, Christmas Clarinets (2016), Clarinet Choir Classics (2012), Wind in the Reeds (2006) and Clarinet Thunder (2009).

Gator Marching Band
Professor Jay Watkins, director

The University of Florida Fightin' Gator Marching Band is one of the largest and most recognizable student organizations on campus. Comprised of over 360 students, the marching band is a collection of some of the most hard-working, intelligent, and enthusiastic individuals at the University and has been since its creation in 1913. The "Pride of the Sunshine" has performed across the country and the globe in destinations such as Phoenix, New Orleans, Miami and London, England for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

In the city of Gainesville, the band and its members are active ambassadors of the University, the College of the Arts and the School of Music. With performances at every home football game in "The Swamp" and numerous other appearances at away games, fundraisers, galas, luncheons, pep rallies and on nationally televised programs, the band is a steadfast and honorable symbol of the Spirit of the University of Florida and the Gator Nation.

Graduate Chamber Ensemble
Dr. Steven Thomas, director

The Graduate Ensemble in residence at the School of Music is comprised of students in the string and piano area. This elite group of musicians comes to the University of Florida from all over the world through a highly competitive selection process. The current ensemble includes students from China, Spain, Mexico, Maine and New York. They are coached regularly by our faculty and also appear in masterclasses with some of the world's most renowned ensembles, recently including the Gewandhaus Quartet (Leipzig) and Calidore Quartet, among others. Their residency includes leadership roles within the school, and they are ambassadors for our programs through their regular performances on campus and in surrounding communities. Graduates of the program typically go on to successful careers as performers and teachers.

Jacaré Brazil
Dr. Welson Tremura, director

Larry Crook founded Jacaré Brazil in 1990. Jacaré Brazil is a UF School of Music ensemble devoted to Brazil’s rich musical heritage. With the addition of Welson Tremura as co-director in 2002, the group became the premiere ensemble of its kind in the United States. Renowned Brazilian guitarist and Bacardi Fellow Ulisses Rocha has furthered the success of Jacaré Brazil. 

Consisting of singers, percussionists, guitarists and other instrumentalists, Jacaré Brazil often collaborates with visiting Latin American musicians and gives numerous performances in the surrounding community and beyond exploring both popular music from all parts of Brazil.

Jazz Ensemble
Professor Scott Wilson, director

Under the direction of Scott Wilson, the UF Gator Jazz Band is the University of Florida’s premier jazz ensemble. The ensemble meets throughout the year and is comprised of 20 of the school’s top undergraduate and graduate jazz musicians. This ensemble is designed to teach students current music industry skill sets and aptly prepare them to break into the commercial music industry. The Gator Jazz Band is a very visible group and performs for concerts, community events, music organizations, charities and fundraisers.

The UF New Music Ensemble is a chamber ensemble of wind, string, and percussion instruments performing repertoire of the 20th and 21st century. Graduate student Diogo Carvalho conducted the ensemble in its Collage Concert performance.

Opera Theatre
Dr. Anthony Offerle, director

The UF Opera Theatre’s mission is to continue the School of Music’s rich tradition of opera performance by offering students numerous stage opportunities in a variety of operatic styles and performing venues. In addition to the educational and performing opportunities available to its students, one of the UF Opera Theatre’s foremost goals is to introduce the exciting world of opera to the regional community by producing musical dramas that appeal to a wide range of audiences.

Recent main stage performances include: La Bohème, ToscaLa TraviataThe MikadoThe Magic FluteSusannahDie Fledermaus, and the world premiere of Stella Sung’s The Red Silk Thread.​

Saxophone Ensemble

The University of Florida Saxophone Ensemble brings together a large and diverse group of musicians performing on various sizes of saxophones for concerts that feature new, original works for saxophones, as well as transcriptions of masterworks of the orchestral and wind band literature. The ensemble welcomes musicians from the entire university community.

Sunshine Steelers Steel Drum Ensemble

The Sunshine Steelers Steel Drum Ensemble started in 1998 under the direction of Dr. Ken Broadway. Now the ensemble performs multiple concerts a year at various venues—from downtown to Lake Wauberg. The ensemble features a mix of students that study a range of disciplines.

Symphony Orchestra
Dr. Raymond Chobaz, director

The University of Florida Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to the learning of symphonic music through performance. The literature includes established orchestral and choral masterworks, ballets and operas, from the 18th century to the present, by composers of all nations and both genders.

In accordance with the research mission of the University of Florida, the Orchestra is also committed to the promotion of new and contemporary as well as noteworthy and overlooked works from the past. With the winning of the ASCAP Foundation Nissim Special Distinction Award in 2013 this objective has been nationally and internationally acknowledged.

Dr. Raymond Chobaz, Music Director and Conductor of the UFSO, is a member of CODA, College Orchestra Directors Association.

University Choir
Dr. Will Kesling, director

The University Choir is the premier choral ensemble in the University of Florida School of Music. Comprised of eighty students, most of whom are pursuing degrees in the field of music, the choir also includes outstanding singers from among the University of Florida's student population. A mixed chorus conducted by Dr. Will Kesling, the University Choir performs culturally diverse choral master works from all style periods, with the repertoire ranging from intimate a cappella settings to grandiose scores with orchestra.

Wind Symphony
Dr. David Waybright, director

Under the direction of Dr. David Waybright, the Wind Symphony is the University of Florida’s premier performing ensemble. The ensemble meets throughout the year and is comprised of 55 of the school’s top undergraduate and graduate wind and percussion performers.

The Wind Symphony is dedicated to performing advanced wind band literature and regularly participates in commissioning new works. In addition, the ensemble has released a number of audio CDs under the Mark Custom label and is scheduled to produce another commercially released recording during the upcoming spring semester.

The Wind Symphony has performed at a variety of events throughout the country including the American Bandmasters Association, Music Educators National Convention, College Band Directors National Association, and Florida Music Educators Association conferences. Recently, the ensemble performed at the 2013 New York Wind Band Festival at Carnegie Hall and internationally at the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference in Singapore. The Wind Symphony offers flexible instrumentation and player rotation in order to provide members of the ensemble with a variety of challenges, responsibilities and playing experiences. Membership in the ensemble is open to students of all degree programs and is selected by audition.
