Combination with Outside Field

This curriculum is designed for students who desire a Bachelor of Music degree, but who also wish to venture into other areas of study and earn a second bachelor’s degree. A number of programs in the colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences; Business Administration; Design, Construction and Planning; Education; Engineering; Health and Human Performance; Public Health and Health Professions; Journalism and Communications; Liberal Arts and Sciences; and the School of Natural Resources and Environment, are available to the students to select from. The goal of this degree track is to able to student to complete all course work for both major in 4 years (with the exception of 5 year Engineering degrees).

Students who are interested in double majoring in music and another field will start with their required course work for music (also known as "tracking requirements") and gradually integrate the 2nd major tracking courses into their schedules during the first 4 semesters. Students often times can "double dip", taking not only the 2nd major required course work but also the general education courses.

This track is also ideal for students who are interested in pre-health related professions (pre-med, pre-vet, pre-OT, etc.) and pre-law.

Students can also pursue a combined degree, a bachelors degree along with a master's degree, typically completed within four years. Most popular options include Master of Science in Management and Master of Science in Entrepreneurship offered by the Hough Graduate School of Business.

Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)
Performance

The Doctor of Musical Arts is a 90-credit, residential degree program delivered at the University of Florida. This DMA program may include up to 30 graduate credits officially transferred from a master's degree. This uniquely designed program is set to prepare highly qualified, elite musicians for both higher education and artistic job markets. The degree is distinguished by the requirement of a cognate (to be determined by the end of the first year) in a discipline outside of Music, such as Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Management, Arts in Medicine, Digital Media, or other areas suitable for interdisciplinary partnership. Cognates can be selected from a number of graduate programs across the UF campus, and a comprehensive list of graduate certificate programs is available on the Graduate School website.

  • Placement exams for music history and theory are offered prior to the first semester. Students who do not place out of review courses, may use these for electives within the DMA.

  • Students may have no more than 30 master's courses evaluated for transfer to the DMA program. The full Graduate School Transfer of Credit policy is available online in the graduate catalog. The academic program plans below may vary slightly according to the individual transfer review.

  • Students present three degree recitals (typically one each spring). Each recital should have 60-75 minutes of music, which must include one work by a living composer.

  • All students will collaborate with a composer and premiere at least one new composition during the DMA degree. The composer can be a student composer at UF or another institution, or a professional composer anywhere in the world. Students are encouraged to seek grant funding to commission a new work. The chair of the supervisory committee and the composition faculty can help facilitate contact with composers and granting organizations.

  • If approved by the student's supervisory chair, one of the three recitals may be a chamber or a lecture recital.

  • Capstone experiences for the degree include a written exam; an oral examination, including a prepared lecture; and a doctoral project defense to assimilate applied music and cognate disciplines.

The DMA cognate
15-21

The cognate area of study is comprised of 5-7 courses, which provides a secondary skill set and knowledge base, and will inform the doctoral project undertaken at the end of the degree. Students identify a cognate area by the end of the first year of doctoral study. Multidisciplinary projects, with the permission of the supervisory committee, may allow for courses in more than one department outside of the School of Music. The graduate coursework taken in a discipline outside the School of Music may include an internship (see below)

MUE 7940 Internship
1-12

An Internship may be taken in support of the primary concentration and/or the cognate area of study. In consultation with the DMA advisor and the supervisory committee chair, the student will conduct proposed projects, engage in other projects at the internship agency or organization, and participate in meetings and professional activities to learn about the agency or organization. Internship course credits vary from 1 to 12 credits, with 1 credit requiring 48 contact hours.

dma exam (3 credits)
Comprehensive written and oral examinations take place in the spring of year 2. The primary focus of the written examination will be major areas of study in music history and music theory and analysis. Responses to questions should demonstrate general, comprehensive musical knowledge, as well as, where appropriate, applicable examples from one’s own discipline. Questions will focus on the synthesis and application of knowledge rather than on recall of information. The oral examination, including a prepared lecture, is undertaken only after successful passage of the written final examination.

The doctoral project entails a creative presentation and an accompanying document detailing the assimilation of the music discipline and the outside cognate. This should happen no later than the beginning of the semester prior to the one during which the doctoral project will be undertaken. The doctoral project is intended to outline, detail, and summarize the topic, assimilating the candidate’s primary music discipline and his/her cognate discipline.

The final doctoral examination, which includes the defense of the doctoral project, is primarily focused on the doctoral project and its application to the field. The supervisory committee may ask questions related to the defense as well as questions of a general nature from the program of study. In no case may this exam be scheduled earlier than the term preceding the semester in which the degree is to be conferred. The doctoral defense is open to the academic community, to which announcements and invitations should be extended.
