In November 2015, School of Art + Art History Associate Professor Kaira M. Cabañas presented her book Off-Screen Cinema: Isidore Isou and the Lettrist Avant-Garde at La Plaque Tournante, an avant-garde music and exhibition space in Berlin. Published earlier this year by the University of Chicago Press, it is the first monograph in English of the Lettrists, focusing on films by the movement’s key figures like Gil J Wolman, Maurice Lemaître, and its founder, Isidore Isou. On view was the first Wolman exhibition in Berlin, Wolman = Lettrism + Détournement, which was curated by the venue’s director Frédéric Acquaviva and presented a fitting context for the European launch of Off-Screen Cinema.
