UF PhD Music Composition student performs across the country and abroad

By Rachel Sherman

Diogo Carvalho, a PhD student in Music Composition at the University of Florida, recently presented and shared his musical talents across the country and abroad over the course of the semester.

Carvalho has participated in three main activities to spread his passion for music all over the world.

First, on November 16, 2016, Carvalho performed one of his compositions, Reveal, at the SCI Student National Conference at Ball State University.

Additionally, Carvalho went to the University of Melbourne in Australia to present his research on the history of the guitar in the United States on December 16, 2016.

“It was amazing to present my research about a topic so important to American music,” Carvalho said. “It was great to contribute to a better understanding about music in the United States. I’ve met scholars from all over the world and had a great time learning from brilliant musicologists!”

Finally, on January 17, 2017, Carvalho went to the University of North Carolina to perform Reveal for the SCI Student Region IV Conference.

“The conference was a reunion of composers from all over the country and a great place to hear contemporary music,” Carvalho said.

Carvalho will also perform at the Iowa New Music Symposium at the University of Iowa on February 25.
