State of Florida allocates $20M for University of Florida School of Music building expansion

The College of the Arts received support from the State of Florida for an additional $20M for the School of Music building project. This additional sum brings the project’s total legislative support to $55M, and the total project budget to $60M, including COTA’s $5M fundraising goal.

The General Appropriations Act signed by Governor Desantis on June 12, 2024 allocates an additional $20M to the project, which is $10M higher than originally anticipated.

State Sen. Keith Perry has led the effort to secure funding.

The proposed project involves upgrades to the acoustic treatment within the current Music Building, alongside the construction of a building expansion. The expansion will accelerate the school’s vision for advancing its curriculum, broaden experiential learning opportunities for students and support faculty research agendas that enhance interdisciplinary collaboration. Among the many new spaces in the building expansion will be a new state-of-the-art performance and presentation hall and recording studio suite.

When completed, the facility will provide the opportunity for the School of Music to fully support its current and future programs, as well as expand the number of students seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees in the various music disciplines.
