SOTD alumnus Matt Mercurio works alongside Helen Mirren

By Briana Lirio

Matt Mercurio is an alumnus from the University of Florida’s School of Theatre and Dance. He earned a role in the film “The Leisure Seeker” which stars Academy Award winner Helen Mirren. However, she is not the only star he has been given the opportunity to work with in this film. The movie is being directed by the famous Italian director, Paolo Virzi, and stars Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland.

The movie is based on the novel by Michael Zadoorian, which centers on an older couple who takes a vacation unbeknownst to their family and doctors. She has cancer and he has Alzheimer’s, despite this they go on a cross-country road trip in hopes of reliving their past.

This film isn’t all Mercurio is working on this year, he will also be in the cast of the independent film “Small Group” at the end of August. However, television series take up most of his time, he is currently working on “Brockmire,” “Devious Maids” and the HBO show “Ballers.”  He co-produced the movie “The Set” and even received a 2016 Audience Choice award for the theatre production he starred in “Bouncers.” The future looks even brighter for Mercurio as he has been selected to be in the NBC Scene Showcase in New York this September.
