MFA candidate in sculpture, Erin Curry’s work, Ambient Air, is featured in The Best American Comics 2014. In an Oct. 13, 2014 article in Paste Magazine, series editor Bill Kartalopoulos said, “One piece that particularly delights me simply because it’s so distinct from anything that’s ever been in The Best American Comics is the excerpt from Erin Curry’s Ambient Air.”
According to Curry, Ambient Air is an abstract comic produced on semi-transparent mylar so the images on each page are hazily visible through the preceding layers before you arrive at them.
Curry’s work was also recognized by The Los Angeles Times, which named her one of the five artists to watch from The Best American Comics 2014.
Also featured in the publication is Tom Hart, an adjunct instructor in the School of Art + Art History and director of The Sequential Artists Workshop. John Wenzel of The Denver Post wrote about Hart’s work saying, “His black-and-white piece RL, excerpted briefly, recounts the loss of his 2-year-old daughter Rosalie by building a hill of fragile, elegantly drawn memories around it. It’s a bleak and devastating work that shows comics’ ability to convey emotion as effectively as any short fiction or literature.”
