World Chagas Day Livestream Concert – UF Digital Worlds Institute – April 14th 2021
On April 14th, 2021 the global community will celebrate a neglected parasitic disease, known as Chagas disease. Dr. Norman Beatty from the University of Florida has made it his mission to bring more awareness to this tropical disease which affects millions throughout the Americas, including the United States. Drs. Welson Tremura and Randolph “Randy” Lee, have joined forces with Beatty to create a unique event, celebrating culture and medicine, with a concert to raise awareness. Digital Worlds Institute will host the live-event where those participating can asks questions via the live-chat and learn about Chagas in-between musical numbers played by the eclectic Brazilian Guitar/Voice and Trumpet duo - Tremura & Lee. Special guests include, Dr. Colin Forsyth from the non-profit organization, Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi), who will accompany Dr. Beatty along with his research coordinator, Rodrigo Alcalá Arana, discussing Chagas and ways we can improve screening and access to health care. Two guests from the Latin American Society of Chagas (LASOCHA), Dr. Rachel Marcus and Jenny Sanchez, will join us that evening to discuss congenital infection and the stigma that may exist in the community. Lastly, a special interview will be conducted with Dr. Daisy Hernandez from Miami University (Ohio) on her book, The Kissing Bug, A True Story of a Family, an Insect, and Nation’s Neglect of a Deadly Disease.
