What I Can Touch displays various artists’ engagement with the artist's creation of an artistic experience while using distinctive, meaningful materials. Thinking about the effects of different materials in our lives, artists were tasked with exploring the influence of one's use of, interaction with, and association with any given material. In their exploration of materiality, the artists also considered the ways in which said materials can be crafted to present a form which is interactive, or an encounter that changes the meaning of the material.
This interactivity ranges from the work being one in which the audience can physically participate in, to work that they can conceptually participate in. Whether it be adding beads, touching claynavigating a space, or being literally reflected in space, all of the works play with the question of what it means to interact with something and how certain materials shape those interactions. It is the hope that, through these encountersinteractions, the audience will feel similarly inspired or influenced by the usage of unique materials in such unconventional ways. While the diverse presentations and forms of these materials are already impressive, the concepts are similarly distinctive. The themes of the works, ranging stretching from the comforts of solitude to the ubiquity of metadata, are quite literally embodied in the works through various engagements with captivating uses of form. As the audience experiences the exhibit, they will encounter a variety of materials, processes and experiences, each informed by a unique artistic process and perspective.
