Join University of Florida Director of Bands Dr. David A. Waybright and the University of Florida Wind Symphony in a performance at the annual conference of the Florida Music Education Association! The program, featuring world-renowned trumpet soloist and Yamaha Performing Artist Rex Richardson and guest conductors Prof. John M. Watkins, Jr. and Dr. Chip Birkner, will include music from current composers as well as classic works to honor Florida music educators whose guidance and passion helped inspire a new generation of teachers.

Dr. Waybright says of the program:

"When I came to the University of Florida on August 1st, 1987 as Director of Bands, I began a journey which is now into its 31st year. Within days of my arrival, my phone rang and Ken Williams, the Director of Winter Park High School, welcomed me to the state. He and Del Kieffner, former Orange County Music Supervisor, invited me to conduct the Orange County Honor Band. My initial year in Florida was spent visiting musicians such as Del and Ken, Jerome Edwards, Duane Hendon, Lewis Jones, Jack Crew, Bobby Adams, Jim Croft, Tom Bishop, and many other of Florida’s cherished educators. Over the years, I witnessed the numerous young band directors who were mentored by these fine gentlemen. In recent years we have lost a number of these irreplaceable teachers. I wanted this concert to be a tribute to their talents, humor, and spirit, which will forever permeate the hallways of this FMEA convention. To mentors past and present, we make this musical offering."

The concert will take place in Ballroom A and is free for attendees of the FMEA conference. Additionally, concert-only tickets can be purchased on-site for $10. For details, visit http://floridamusiceducation.org/conference/

James M. Stephenson and Rex Richardson will present a clinic, "Collaboration: Riding the Creative Tension," at the conference. From the FMEA website: "James Stephenson’s “Rextreme” Concerto was precisely crafted to showcase Rex Richardson’s personal approach to the trumpet. Since its 2010 premiere in Sydney Australia, this uniquely virtuosic, genre-bending work has been performed dozens of times on five continents, in its various versions for orchestra, concert band, brass band and piano reduction. Composer and soloist discuss the process of bringing a major composition to life, from raising money to creating the music to booking concerts." The clinic will take place Friday, January 12th, 2018 from 7:45AM-8:45AM in Room 18 of the Tampa Convention Center. The clinic is open to attendees of the conference.
