Hymns & Heroes from the Movies

Can you imagine your favorite epic film without a rousing musical score? Can you imagine the final lightsaber duel between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Won Kenobi, and Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace without the pulse racing beat of the drums, the driving orchestrated energy coupled with the “war-cry” lyrics in the old Welsh tongue? I doubt it would be nearly as exhilarating; the emotional factor is almost completely eliminated.

A hero exemplifies bravery in situations where most wouldn’t. Also, a hero’s actions inspire others to do great things. In this concert extravaganza we celebrate some of the silver screen’s bravest and boldest heroes. They may be the blockbuster hero you’ve come to know and love. They may be the unsung hero simply trying to do the right thing, or the indomitable every-man or woman pitted against all odds. Nevertheless, the musical scores that depict these super- humans range from the thrilling to the tender.

Dr. Will Kesling conducts the 250 performers comprised of the UF Concert Choir and Symphony Orchestra and the Gainesville Master Chorale: the same performing forces you have come to enjoy at the School of Music’s annual Sounds of the Season concerts.

Verdi’s cantata Hymn of Nations calls for a tenor soloist with bravura. Stephen Mark Brown is that internationally known opera tenor with the ability to handle one of Verdi’s most demanding vocal exercises. Mr. Brown has sung with Luciano Pavarotti on the television program “Pavarotti Plus” and he has also sung at La Scala, and more.
