The Tenor Saxophone Legacy Project is a new ensemble formed in 2019. It is a collaborative project, with compositional contributions coming from all 3 founding members, saxophonists Jack Wilkins, Jeremy Brown and pianist Per Danielsson. The ensemble concept was developed by Professors Brown and Wilkins during Professor Wilkins 2017 Fulbright appointment to the University of Calgary as Senior Researcher in the College of Creative and Performing Arts. The group has performed in Canada at the University of Calgary and at the 2019 CMS International Conference in Belgium. In October they recorded a CD, with an expected 2020 release date. Concert tours of Canada and the US will take place in March 2020.

This concert of original compositions written and/or arranged for 2 tenor saxophones and piano celebrates the legacy of the tenor saxophone. These new works utilize contemporary styles and approaches and are composed and arranged especially for this group by Dr. Jeremy Brown, Jack Wilkins and Per Danielsson.

    Works to be performed:
Belgium Blues – Composer Jeremy Brown explores contrapuntal melodies and contrasting rhythmic styles in this piece.
Giant Madness –  Composer Jack Wilkins creatively reworks melodic lines from the improvised solos of tenor saxophone masters John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins.
Embodiment of Soul: A Tribute to Coleman Hawkins – this Wilkins composition pays homage to the sound and melodic improvisations of the master saxophonist.
Dig Dis – Wilkins uses the Hank Mobley improvised solo from his famous “Soul Station” recording as the main material for this arrangement.
Swedes on Reeds – Composer Per Danielsson develops material taken from the Domnerus and Guilin solos from the Famous Swedish jazz recording “Clifford Brown and Art Farmer with the Swedish All Stars".
