Peter Ryan, Piano & Ryan Tackett Wardell, Baritone | Guest Artist Recital

Guest artists Peter Ryan and Ryan Tackett Wardell will present a recital titled "Opening Doors: Music from LGBT Composers". It is a program of art songs designed to highlight works from notable LGBT composers. The songs on this program were chosen based on the desire to include various groups within the LGBT music community, from composers that spent a lifetime "closeted" such as Tchaikovsky, to openly "out" composers in the case of Ned Rorem and Ethel Smyth. Works by Schubert, Ravel, Copland, and Bernstein were included to highlight LGBT composers that have become well-known names, yet knowledge of their sexuality is often limited to those in the classical music community. It is the hope of the performers that the works on this program will aid in educating audiences and normalizing conversations about these composers' true selves.
