University Galleries at the University of Florida presents Layers in the Gary R. Libby Gallery in Fine Arts C (FAC) located on UF’s campus May 8 - September 22, 2017. An opening reception for Layers will take place in the Gary R. Libby Gallery on September 8, 2017, 7-9 pm.
Layers highlights work by artist Iryna Kanishcheva. With this exhibition, Kanishcheva explores work in a previously undeveloped direction: abstract photography in the study of urban art; photographs taken in a way that it would not usually be seen. By isolating parts of the subject through the use of blur, Kanishcheva highlights details that strangers (passers by the 34th Street Wall) would not normally pay attention to.
Iryna Kanishcheva is a well-known figure in the street art world. She was born and raised in Ukraine where she received two master's degrees in Business Management and Pharmaceutical Technologies. Upon moving to the USA, she changed direction, developing and curating the first urban art project in North Florida, 352walls/The Gainesville Urban Art Initiative, for which she was awarded the 2015 Public Art Award. Iryna is also the Co-Founder and Co-Curator of ArtUnitedUs (Kiev, Ukraine), a project well-known for such significant artworks as the tallest mural in Europe, and co-founder/curator of Grove Street Neighborhood, a community project in Gainesville. She has also established a guide to the street art scene in Gainesville, GNVUrbanArt.com.
