The University of Florida’s School of Art + Art History’s Harn Eminent Scholar Chair in Art History (HESCAH) program presents:

    "Surrealism, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow"

A two-day symposium that investigates the histories of Surrealism and issues of gender, sexuality, race, and colonialism. Take a look at Surrealism and its engagements with issues of gender, sexuality, race and colonialism. The title, “Surrealism, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” comes from an essay André Breton published in 1932 where he was analyzing the movement’s origins and future directions.

The conference will begin on Friday, March 22 at 3:00 pm, followed by a keynote address that evening at 5:30 pm by Patricia Allmer (University of Edinburgh) titled “Traumatic Temporalities: Postwar Women Artists and Surrealism.” A public reception is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

On Saturday, March 23, the conference will begin at 10:00 am and continue until 5:15 pm.

Throughout, panel talks will be given by: Katharine Conley (The College of William & Mary, Dartmouth College), Jonathan P. Eburne (The Pennsylvania State University), Terri Francis (University of Miami), Amy Lyford (Occidental College), Alyce Mahon (Cambridge University), Jordan Reznick (Grinnell College), Juno Richards (Yale University), Rachel Silveri (University of Florida), Abigail Susik (Willamette University), and Anna Watz (Uppsala University).

The symposium runs in conjunction with the exhibition Surrealism at the Harn: A Centennial Celebration on view at The Harn Museum of Art until June 2, 2024.
