- Description
"From Colored to Black: The Stories of North Central Florida" is a collection of nine original dramatic vignettes, created by student interns in the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program who are enrolled in a new course: "The Oral History Connection: Performing Oral History for Social Justice." These scenes will be performed by members of the Gainesville theatre community in partnership with The Actors' Warehouse. Performances are on April 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. and April 15 from 3 to 4 p.m.
Composed from the Oral Histories of North Central Florida residents from the 1920s to the present day, these vignettes focus on the Black History of the region and connect to themes represented in the work of Jacob Lawrence. Performed in the Jacob Lawrence Exhibit at the Harn Museum, these scenes bring to life stories from the Civil Rights Movement in Gainesville and St. Augustine, Black Friday at UF, Lincoln High School, WWII Veterans in Japan, Frank Butler and the creation of Butler Beach, Black Policemen in Gainesville, stories from Rosewood and Ocala, and more. - VenueSamuel P.
