Absence & Presence by Monsur Awotunde | Opening Reception

In this experimental body of work, Monsur Awotunde is interested in food as an essential human commodity. The comparison between the abundance of native Yoruba meals at home in Lagos, Nigeria and the inaccessibility of these specific meals in Gainesville, FL has particularly inspired his current series of paintings. The absence of familiar food relates to the absence of the family members and friends who prepared those meals back home. As a result, nostalgia and replacement are common themes in Awotunde's abstract paintings.
