Joyce Davis joined the University of Florida School of Music in 1989. For twenty-five years, she was Professor of Trumpet. Davis was named Professor Emeritus/Trumpet in Spring 2014 upon her retirement. She is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy, attended the University of Michigan, and holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Florida State University, the Master of Music in Performance from Northwestern University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance from The Ohio State University. Her teachers included Vincent Cichowicz, Richard Burkart, Adolph Herseth, and Armando Ghitalla.
Her teaching experience also includes The Ohio State University, part-time Lecturer of Trumpet at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. She has presented master classes at numerous institutions throughout the United States, at the Moscow Conservatory, Gnesins College of Music, Moscow, Saratov Conservatory in Russia, the National Academy of Music of Ukraine (Kiev), University of Göteborg (Sweden) School of Music and Musicology, the Newcastle Conservatorium at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia, and the Sydney Conservatorium, Sydney, Australia.
As an orchestral player, Davis was Principal Trumpet of the Cape Town Symphony, la Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico, la Orquesta Filharmonica de la UNAM, and substitute and extra section player with the Cincinnati Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops, Charleston (SC), Columbus (OH) Jacksonville (Florida), and Savannah symphonies. Her numerous solo performances have been as a recitalist and soloist in the United States, Mexico, South Africa, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, and Australia.
Among Dr. Davis’publications include co-editing the Memoirs of Timofei Dokshizer, the legendary Russian trumpet virtuoso. She also wrote the English foreword to Dokshizer’s System for Trumpet Study. Davis and Dr. Edward H. Tarr, the world-renowned trumpet scholar, together edited The Trumpeters of Kiev Past and Present. In addition, Davis has contributed various reviews and articles to the Journal of the International Trumpet Guild. She co-produced the International Trumpet Guild’s CD, Russian Treasures of Timofei Dokshizer. Davis was the first woman to serve as President of International Trumpet Guild, an organization of over 6000 members. She received the International Trumpet Guid Award of Merit in 2006. Dr. Davis is an entry in Trumpet Greats, A Biographical Dictionarycompiled and edited by David Hickman, Dr. Edward H. Tarr and Michel LaPlace.
