Music Business and Entrepreneurship

Admissions Information / Certificate (Graduate)

The School of Music’s graduate certificate in Music Business & Entrepreneurship addresses the diverse and evolving needs of music business professionals. The comprehensive curriculum combines essential knowledge with practical experience, which engages students in a five-step process—ideation, creation, organization, ownership, and informed testing—geared toward developing innovative entrepreneurial endeavors in the music industry.

The certificate program requires a total of 12 credit hours. The 4 courses must be completed with a grade of B or higher and are: MUM 6007: Strategic Music Entrepreneurship Development (3 credits), MUM 6008: Foundations of Music Business (3 credits), MUM 6502C: Music Production in Commercial Media (3 credits), MUM 6565C: Multimedia Production for the Music Industry (3 credits)

UF students
Currently enrolled UF graduate students in an academic/music-related discipline (communications, law, business, etc.) are invited to register for 2 of the 4 courses before formally applying for the certificate.

Non-degree
Registration for the graduate certificate is also an option for non-UF enrolled students. Applications are reviewed two times a year, apply by November 1 for a spring semester course registration and by April 30 for a fall semester start. Interested students may reach out at any time during the fall/spring semesters to discuss the curriculum. Students must be approved as non-degree seeking to register for classes to complete the certificate program.

To earn the certificate, you must: 1) apply via the online application below and be approved, 2) take all 4 courses and earn the B grader or higher, and 3) upon completion (prior to graduation from UF) apply in ONE.UF to have it conferred (added as completed on your UF transcript). The last step will occur by the degree application deadline in the final semester of completing the requirements. We cannot confer the certificate after you graduate from the University of Florida.

UF Graduate students:

1.) Take up to 2 courses (maximum) and earn B grades
  • After completing 2 courses, with a minimum B grade, submit the certificate application in step 2.
2.) Submit the University of Florida Certificate Application
  • Apply here and select the upcoming semester so this becomes part of your UF degree plan in ONE.UF.
  • Contact your current department after you submit the certificate application as they will 'refer' this certificate application to the College of the Arts.

(Your Graduate Coordinator may not know how to complete this step, but someone who handles admissions for the department will be authorized to complete this referal step. Please ask that they email graduate@arts.ufl.edu so we know it is ready for the formal decision.)

  • Upon the program's admission decision, notification will be posted for you to see in the online certificate application as well as your student record in ONE.UF.
  • You will also receive an admission confirmation letter with steps on the completion process.
