Become a Practicum Site

Arts in Medicine Graduate Practicum is designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on mentored experience in the arts in health field. Both Graduate Certificate and MA students take the Practicum course. As our enrollment grows, so does the need for our students to find welcoming, professional learning environments that allow them to deepen and expand their professional competencies.

Students begin to think about these opportunities from the moment they enter the graduate program. We encourage students to embrace these opportunities to develop skills and gain experiences that relate directly to their learning and career goals.

Our goal for the Practicum experience is to provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge and understanding of professional competencies to hands-on practice in healthcare, community, or public health settings  with the support of our graduate faculty.

Our graduate students are located across the US and abroad. If your arts in health program or organization would like to host a Practicum student, please follow this link to complete the Practicum Site Interest Form.

Appropriate practicum sites may include the following:

  • Hospitals (and related facilities, such as Ronald McDonald houses)
  • Clinics
  • Long-term care facilities
  • Hospice facilities
  • Community programs or centers (e.g., for children, teens, seniors)*
  • Centers for people with disabilities or special needs
  • Prisons or detention centers
  • Museums*
  • Schools*
  • Summer programs*
  • Veteran programs or centers

Appropriate alternative virtual practicum programs may include the following:

  • Approved virtual activities through any of the previously listed sites.
  • Approved independently created arts in health activities or series via Zoom or other online platform delivered to individuals or groups.

*It is important that the focus of the proposed practicum work is on facilitating the arts for the purpose of enhancing health or wellbeing.  Simply instructing or facilitating art in a school, community center, or museum, for example, would not be appropriate arts in health experience. However, implementing and participating in a theatre program for health education in a school or helping participants create health messaging banners for a senior center are examples of appropriate practicum focus.
