Doctor of Philosophy in Music

The Ph.D. in Music at the University of Florida is a research-intensive doctoral program for students pursuing advanced scholarship in musicology, music theory or composition. This degree is designed for individuals who want to contribute original research to the field, engage critically with music across cultures and eras and prepare for careers in academia, publishing or interdisciplinary inquiry.

Students work closely with UF’s distinguished faculty, benefiting from mentorship, teaching opportunities and access to interdisciplinary resources across campus. With a strong emphasis on writing, analysis and research methods, the Ph.D. program encourages students to explore new questions and challenge conventional thinking about music.

As a Ph.D. student, you will:

  • Conduct original research in your chosen area of specialization
  • Engage with current debates and methodologies in music scholarship
  • Collaborate with faculty and peers across disciplines
  • Present work through lectures, publications and conference participation
  • Prepare for careers in academia, research, writing or cultural leadership

Competitive assistantships and fellowships are available for qualified applicants.

See full details and concentrations in the UF Graduate Catalog.
