Master of Arts in Museology (Museum Studies)
We believe museums can change the world.
The MA in Museum Studies equips you to shape museums and cultural heritage institutions. You will probe museums’ legacies, challenge their possibilities, and explore the history and theory of museum practice around the world. Theory meets practice through opportunities to learn outside the classroom. From registration to curatorship, you will study all areas of museums with continual opportunities for hands-on experience.
You are encouraged to lean into interdisciplinary studies across the breadth of a top-tier research university. Many students pair the MA with certificates in Historic Preservation, Non-Profit Management, Digital Humanities, Latin American Studies, and other UF offerings.
Graduates of the program work in museums, libraries, archives, national parks, and other non-profit institutions as curators, registrars, collection managers, educators, and fundraisers. Recent alumni now serve at the National Museum of American History, Field Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, Clark Atlanta University Art Museum, and beyond.
We partner with local institutions to organize exhibitions and co-create heritage projects. All students complete an internship with recent students having gained experience at the National Museum of the American Indian, Art Bridges Foundation, National Museum of African American History and Culture, MOCA Jacksonville, Harn Museum of Art, and Florida Museum of Natural History, to name a few. Faculty bring museum professionals into your classes and lead an annual trip. Recent destinations have included Washington, DC; Savannah, GA; and Montgomery, AL.
Our students come from many academic backgrounds, including anthropology, area studies, art, art history, education, history, interdisciplinary majors, music, and more. Whether you’re already a museum professional or just beginning, the MA in Museum Studies will prepare you to make a difference.
