Drawing

Overview

Refine your perspective. Expand your visual language.

Drawing at UF is rooted in exploration, expression and the power of mark-making. Students develop a studio practice informed by ideas and observation—where drawing becomes both a mode of inquiry and a deeply personal visual language.

Through a wide range of techniques, materials and conceptual approaches, you’ll create work that is bold, experimental and uniquely your own.

Undergraduate degrees

  • BA in Art
  • BFA in Art
  • Minor in Art

As an undergraduate drawing student, you’ll develop your personal vision through a thoughtful, skill-building progression of studio courses. The program begins with foundational studies and moves into advanced techniques, conceptual development and a dedicated senior year studio experience.

Early coursework includes:

  • Perceptual Drawing and Figure Drawing I, focused on observation and anatomy
  • Movement and Motion, exploring visual movement through two-dimensional form

In your junior year, you’ll expand your practice through:

  • Color Drawing and Figure Drawing II
  • Sketchbook/Journal Development
  • Experimental Drawing, engaging traditional and contemporary approaches including altered books, installation, performance, hand-drawn animation and site-specific projects

During your senior year, you will work to distill your skills even further by:

  • Developing your professional practice and studio ethic
  • Honing your unique voice and vision
  • Expanding your visual language repertoire
  • Pushing boundaries through experimentation, self-reflection and self-discipline

Alumni go on to careers in animation, design, galleries and education, and pursue MFA programs at top institutions across the country.

Graduate degrees

  • MFA in Art

As a graduate student in drawing, you’ll develop a focused studio practice shaped by research, experimentation and critical dialogue. The MFA program fosters conceptual, aesthetic and technical growth, helping you refine your ideas and strengthen your voice as an artist.

Over three years, you’ll:

  • Engage in studio coursework, research methods, theory and criticism
  • Receive individualized mentorship and regular tutorial-based instruction
  • Participate in cross-disciplinary seminars and independent study
  • Build a cohesive body of work supported by rigorous critique and peer exchange

Housed within a top-tier research university, the program offers access to world-class libraries, lectures and creative research initiatives across the humanities and sciences. You’ll also have opportunities to participate in gallery and museum tours, study abroad and collaborative programs such as SAC (Science and Art Collaboration) and the Creativity in the Arts and Sciences Program.

Our graduates pursue careers as studio artists, educators, designers and museum professionals—and regularly earn fellowships, residencies and academic positions across the country and beyond.
