All Graduate Students – START HERE
Step 1: Review Admissions Requirements
Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. While most applicants have a background in communication design or a closely related field—such as architecture, industrial design, or interior design—we recognize that design can be learned in many ways and welcome applicants from other academic majors.
All applicants must demonstrate a level of achievement appropriate for graduate study in this discipline. Application materials should reflect:
- An understanding of the iterative design process
- Critical and conceptual thinking within a design context (including design and visual communication skills and abilities)
- The ability to collaborate effectively
Prospective students are encouraged to contact the Director of Graduate Studies at design@arts.ufl.edu with any questions or to arrange a campus visit prior to applying.

English Proficiency
The University of Florida requires proficiency in spoken and written English to ensure international students can participate fully in academic and campus life. Students from non-English-speaking countries who have not completed at least one year of study at a U.S. college or university must submit scores from one of the following:
- IELTS Academic: minimum score of 6.0
- TOEFL Paper-Based: minimum score of 550
- TOEFL Internet-Based: minimum score of 80
For students seeking teaching assistantships:
- A Speaking score of 28 or higher demonstrates readiness.
- Applicants with Speaking scores between 23–27 may need to complete an additional course before receiving a teaching assignment.
- A minimum Writing score of 24 is recommended for graduate-level coursework.
UF’s TOEFL school code is 5812.
English Proficiency Exemptions
You may be exempt from submitting English proficiency scores if:
- You have completed one academic year in a degree-seeking program at a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. or in a country where English is the official language.
- You hold an earned associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a recognized institution in the U.S. or a country where English is the official language.
See the list of countries exempt from English proficiency requirements.
English Language Support
UF’s English Language Institute (ELI) offers academic and language support to graduate students, including:
- SPEAK & EAP 5836 courses for Academic Writing and International Teaching Assistant Support (as required by the Graduate School or your department).

Additional Resources
Assistantships & Fellowships
Assistantships are salaried positions requiring an average of 20 hours per week in duties such as teaching, technical/studio/lab support, gallery assistance, administrative support, and research. These positions make up the majority of the school’s financial aid and are awarded during the admissions review process.
Graduate assistants are evaluated annually. Reappointment depends on faculty evaluation of job performance and satisfactory academic progress. Most assistantships are renewed for the standard duration of the student’s program, as stated in the admission award.
In addition to a stipend, assistantship recipients receive:
- Tuition Waivers covering the minimum credits for full-time enrollment:
- 9 credits in fall and spring
- 3 credits in summer A or B, or 6 credits in summer C
- GatorGradCare Health Insurance, with a student monthly premium currently set at $12. Details are available through GatorGradCare.
Please note:
All fees must be paid by the deferment deadline to avoid a $100 late fee and potential cancellation of registration.
Tuition waivers do not cover university fees (approximately $850–$950 per semester) or course fees (typically $45–$75 per graduate course).
University fees are deferred until mid-semester, allowing time to plan for payment.
Application Information
There is no separate application required for graduate assistantships or fellowships.
To be considered, indicate your interest within the UF online application and address your qualifications in your statement of purpose. All applicants must also submit a résumé or CV, which is used to match available assistantship opportunities with your experience, skills, and strengths.
Note: Teaching assistantships are typically awarded beginning in the second year of study unless you have prior teaching experience.
Notice of Awards
Graduate assistantship and fellowship awards are determined during the faculty admissions review process. Our goal is to include any funding offer in your official admission letter. However, in some cases, funding decisions may be delayed or you may be placed on a waitlist. If this occurs, it will be clearly noted in your admission letter.
Note: Due to limited funding, not all qualified applicants receive an assistantship or fellowship. If you accept admission without a funding award, it is unlikely that you will receive one later. You may, however, express continued interest to be considered during the next review cycle.
Financial Aid (NOT Assistantships or Fellowships)
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opens each year on October 1. While you must be admitted before receiving aid, we encourage you to submit your FAFSA early—even before your admission decision—to avoid delays.
To be considered for scholarship opportunities, complete the FAFSA well before the December 15 priority deadline. This allows the federal processor time to evaluate and send your information to UF Student Financial Aid. Applications for federal loans may still be submitted after this date and are accepted throughout the year.

Note: Federal financial aid is available to U.S. students only. International applicants should consult the UF International Center for available resources.
