- School of Art + Art History
Maria Kuran is a doctoral student studying modern and contemporary Arab art under Dr. Álvaro Luís Lima. Having grown up in Lebanon, she is most interested in the intersections of art with politics, identity, and neo-colonialism in the Levant, particularly through narratives surrounding the Lebanese Civil War in the 1970s and 80s. She earned her MA from the University of Chicago with an emphasis in Curatorial Studies; her thesis utilized the exhibition of Mona Hatoum from 2015-16 at Tate Modern and the Centre Pompidou as a case study exploring the politics of globalization in the confines of the Euro-American museum framework. Maria also happens to be a double Gator, having first received her undergraduate degree in Art History from UF, and was one of the founding members of the student-led publication, Dinner + No Show.
