Lainie Ettema

Lainie Ettema is an interdisciplinary, research-based artist from Michigan. Using oil paint, silicone, sculpture, and digital processes, her work stimulates dialogue surrounding gender, probing the intersection of the body, technology, and the bathroom. Informed by theories of the male gaze, chromophobia, and abjection, she locates feminist potential in fragmentation and hybridity. Through compressed faces, disjointed limbs, and body-object hybrids in flux, Ettema suggests not diminishment but movement: a shift, an escape, a refusal to conform to arbitrary measures of femininity.

Lainie Ettema earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art and Design from Alma College and received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Florida. She currently lives in Gainesville where she is a Visiting Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at the University of Florida. Extending her teaching abroad, Ettema has also been an instructor in France at the Université Catholique de Lille with the Arts and Engineering program.
