James Oliverio is an American academic who holds full professorships in both Digital Arts & Sciences and Music at the University of Florida. He served as the founding Director of the University of Florida Digital Worlds Institute (2001–2023), where he guided the Institute’s emergence as an internationally recognized hub for interdisciplinary research, development, and production in interactive and distributed digital media.

Digital Worlds houses degree programs in Digital Arts & Sciences (DAS), including the one-year, intensive Master of Arts in Digital Arts & Sciences (MiDAS), which emphasizes emerging technologies, and the Bachelor of Arts in Digital Arts & Sciences (BADAS), offered in both on-campus and online formats. Oliverio has served as Principal Investigator and/or Co-Principal Investigator on numerous cross-disciplinary initiatives supported by major funders and cultural organizations, including the National Science Foundation (NSF); the U.S. Department of Defense/Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP); the U.S. Department of Agriculture; the National Endowment for the Arts; the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS); the Lila Wallace–Reader’s Digest Foundation; and the Atlanta Committee for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.

As a composer and producer, Oliverio has an extensive record of commissioned work and high-profile performances. His orchestral scores have been commissioned and premiered by ensembles including the Cleveland Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Columbus, and Pittsburgh, with additional performances at Carnegie Hall and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. His cultural collaborations include production work with Jazz at Lincoln Center and partnerships with the New York Philharmonic, the New York City Ballet, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. He has also served as an Artistic Consultant on multiple projects with jazz legend Wynton Marsalis.

Prior to joining the University of Florida, Oliverio was Composer-in-Residence and Director of the AudioLab in the Graphics, Visualization, and Usability (GVU) Center within the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Computing.
