Brittany Hughes is a PhD candidate studying under Dr. Melissa Hyde. She is interested in the role of dress and textiles in the construction of identity throughout the long eighteenth century. Her dissertation explores various ways turquerie was used as a mechanism of meaning-making for sitters in European portraits, with a particular focus on French and English examples. This work is an expansion of her master’s thesis,“Fashioning the Other: Sartorial Turquerie in Ancien Régime France.” Brittany holds a BA in Art History and a BS in Apparel Design and Production, both from Colorado State University (2014), and a MA in Art History from the University of Colorado Boulder (2020).
