Dr. Abbey Chokera (Ph.D. Music Education ‘16) has been appointed by the President of Kenya’s office to be the Senior Assistant Director of Music for the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts.
Dr. Chokera began his doctorate program at the University of Florida (UF) in the fall of 2012. For his dissertation, he researched the effects of specific music education and pedagogy training on elementary classroom teachers who teach music in Kenya.
He later assumed the role as Director of the UF Africa Choir, better known as Pazeni Sauti.
Soon after the completion of his doctorate, Dr. Chokera returned to his faculty positions at Kenyatta University. He also directs the Moi Girls Choir who has repeatedly won the annual Kenyan Choral Festival competition with over 1,000 choirs participating.
Dr. Chokera has now left his faculty position at Kenyatta University for the new commission post. Although Dr. Chokera’s new position takes him away from teaching music, he will continue to direct the Moi Girls Choir. His presidential appointment will offer him direct involvement in Kenyan government policy, more research opportunities and the administration of music issues.
