Museum Studies alumna accepts new position at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

By Katherine Loughrey

UF alumna Katy Estes-Smargiassi (MA Museum Studies '15) recently accepted the position as Assistant Collections Manager of Invertebrate Paleontology at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles County.

Currently, she participates in a National Science Foundation grant called the TCN (Thematic Collection Network) EPICC, a project focused on digitizing invertebrate collections from the Cenezoic Period (last 66 million years), in the Eastern Pacific Rim.

For the next four years, the focus will be on digitizing photos and metadata for almost a million specimens from the Invertebrate Paleontology collection estimated to be the second or third largest in the United States and one of the largest in the world.

Katy reports, “The work has already been really exciting - I even got to do some field work in my first week."
