Jack Massing began working together with Michael Galbreth in 1983 while students at the University of Houston. Their collaboration spanning more than thirty-five years is a meta project that they titled “The Art Guys”. Known for staged performances, public spectacles, and “behavioral” interventions that challenge divisions between art and life, The Art Guys have been described by the New York Times as “a cross between Dada and David Letterman, John Cage and the Smothers Brothers.” The Art Guys regularly used humor and everyday materials to demystify art and welcome a broad range of audiences into the discourse of contemporary art.
The Art Guys participated in over 150 exhibitions in museums, galleries and public spaces throughout the United States, Europe, Cuba, and China. In addition, they created over 40 solo exhibitions including the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Tacoma Art Museum, the de Saisset Museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art. Their major public art projects include the Intercontinental Airport Houston, Phoenix Airport and the University of Houston as well as civic and private commissions. Massing was born in Buffalo New York and is based in Houston, Texas. - Links
