Under Her Wing

Join us Friday, May 16, 6-9PM for the opening reception of "Under Her Wing," a solo exhibition by Hannah Shipley (MFA in Art, Painting + Drawing candidate). Refreshments will be provided at the opening reception. This exhibition will be open for viewing through May 26, 2025.


"Under Her Wing" remembers and reimagines childhood memories through the lens of multiple familial perspectives. Hannah Shipley finds meaning in the seemingly mundane, yet surprisingly monumental, where her work follows a familial and personal path. Set in a time and place where innocence, safety, and sweetness supposedly existed, this exhibition challenges the creation of identity, the incorrectness of memory, and exposes the dysfunction of growing up. Shipley’s childhood memories are selective, visceral, skewed, and sloppy–what she now recognizes as protection, shelter, and dysfunction. Adulterated and reworked by her own memories and those of her family members, her stories have become consumed with recurring characters of maternal ducks and paternal chairs, joined by donuts, nests, cigarettes, and curling toes. These drawings juxtapose both the failure of memory and its endurance; where the more remembered, the more distorted the story becomes.

Memory is a convincing liar, but as stories are told and memories are rehearsed, some elements become foundational, while others break down and crumble away–becoming a metaphor for the collapse and unity of family. "Under Her Wing" is a reminder of what is often unseen while tributing the act of telling and reliving a story, over and over again, each time with a shifted lens.
