    What’s so shocking about a black man playing Othello? It’s 1833 and little known African-American star Ira Aldridge replaces the popular white star Charles Kean at London’s Covent Garden. Aldridge’s appearance as Othello sends shockwaves through a surprised audience as riots rage in the streets over the abolition of slavery.

    Lolita Chakrabarti's Red Velvet was described by the Los Angeles Times as “a play that moves beyond a surefire theater-history-buff demographic to make a potent case for how things have and haven’t changed over the centuries.”
