- Description
Born in Havana, Cuba in 1966, Lilian Garcia-Roig now lives and works in Tallahassee, Florida. Her most extensive body of works feature large-scale on-site painting installations of dense landscapes that overwhelm the viewer’s perceptual senses. Her newest works, “Hecho En Cuba” (Made In Cuba) and “Hecho Con Cuba” (Made With Cuba) explore the idea of a hyphenated-nature and offer a more conceptual approach in reconciling her Cuban and American pictorial and personal identities. Garcia-Roig has shown Internationally and nationally at such places as the Chopo Museum (Mexico City), Byblos Gallery (Verona, Italy), the Americas Society Gallery (NYC), Museum of Latin American Art (Long Beach), the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Art Museum of the Americas (Washington D.C) as well as extensively in many museums throughout the southeast, especially in Texas and Florida. Lilian Garcia-Roig's MFA is from the University of Pennsylvania (1990) and her BFA is from Southern Methodist University (1988). From 1991 to 2000 she was a tenured Associate Professor of Studio Art at the University of Texas at Austin and in 2001 was a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of California at Berkeley in the Department of Art Practice before deciding to move to Tallahassee where she became the Director of Graduate Studies in Studio Art from 2002-2008. Currently she is a professor at FSU where she serves as the Painting and Drawing Area Head and the Director of Art on Campus.
