  • Description

    I AM THE DEAD MAN is an adaption of Mia Couto’s novel Under the Frangipani and will consider the effects of war and Portuguese colonization upon Mozambique. Part murder mystery, part ritual, this project will call on the performative devices of interrogation, confession, and ceremony in equal parts. Co-producer Saudade Theatre is the first and only theatre company in the United States dedicated to producing original work grounded in the Portuguese-American consciousness. I AM THE DEAD MAN is co-created and will be co-directed by Saudade Theatre’s founder and Co-Artistic Director Filipe Valle Costa, and Guest artist and actor Stephen Malcolm Ruffin. With Saudade Theatre Executive Producer and project dramaturg Vanessa Varela, all members of the creative team are UF alumni.
