- Description
Specializing in the musical traditions of Latin America's largest nation, UF Jacaré Brazil represents the most diverse performance ensemble of its kind within a university performing arts program. The program features the Alachua Guitar Ensemble performing selections from Laurindo de Almeida's Brazilian Guitar Suite and a Brazilian traditional dance. The concert also features a combination of orchestral instruments, guitars, and traditional percussion performing Brazilian "choro" (an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre which originated in 19th century Rio de Janeiro) arranged by different authors.
These unique mixtures created interesting textures and have provided us new musical territories for the exploration of sound. For those already exposed to Brazilian music, we hope these rhythms and instrumental/vocal combinations will provoke feelings of saudade, or nostalgia for Brazil. For newcomers, we hope this introduction to Brazilian music will demonstrate why Brazilian music has developed such a global appeal.
The concert will also be streamed live on YouTube. In reason of limited seating, please email Professor Tremura for confirmation of availability by November 20th.
