The University of Florida School of Theatre + Dance is honored to invite patrons to attend an evening of dance that features work from our illustrious faculty in Dance 2022: On. Going On... This new dance showcase was coordinated and directed by Elizabeth Johnson and Alex Springer and features works by Peter Carpenter, Isa García-Rose, Xan Burley + Alex Springer and Elizabeth Johnson.
Isa García-Rose’s premiere of Fiebre Tropical is a nostalgic dance journey through music and lyrics of legendary artists Tito Puente and La Lupe, recalling the sumptuous past of the Tropicana Night Club in Habana, Cuba. Other choreographers are re-examining previous works anew. Xan Burley and Alex Springer’s duet You being Me being You and the Eye staged on and in collaboration with student performers enacts and visibilizes memory and “personness,” gesturing toward togetherness and stories of self past, present, and future. Examining the artform of dance through the lens of labor economics, Peter Carpenter’s Working. Joe. asks the audience to pay attention to the effort that dancers are usually expected to disguise as well as consider the byproducts of the work art requires. Set to iconic Heart songs, Elizabeth Johnson’s Burn It to the Wick visits recurrent themes in her work: pop culture clichés of femininity, women’s physical strength and endurance, and the enjoyment of riding the waves of rock n’ roll’s pounding rhythms. *
