Vitruvian Women, Paintings by Allison Zuckerman

The School of Art + Art History and the University Gallery are honored to host Allison Zuckerman as the featured artist for Creative B 2019. She will be in residence during Summer B conducting two sets of workshops with UF students.

Allison Zuckerman received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2012 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. She is a rising artist experiencing incredible commercial and critical success including being the featured artist at the esteemed Rubell Collection for Art Basel Miami Beach in 2017. Zuckerman paints dramatic, large scale works, that are based on well-known art historical images and references.  She considers the construction of the work as visual sampling. She samples from her own past paintings as well as Picasso, Lichtenstein, Cezanne, Matisse, among others. Female heads appear on male bodies, context is shifted between place and time. She remakes the art historical lineage and inserts herself firmly inside of this history, focused on exploring how women have been depicted by male artists throughout history.

“Vitruvian Women” features Zuckerman’s first intensive study into the High Renaissance works of Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. Her time at UF will be a collaborative exploration and evolution of this work with UF faculty and students in honor of the Leonardo 19 year. The Leonardo 19 initiative is a UF-wide effort to celebrate the life, works, and inspiration of Leonardo da Vinci as 2019 marks the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death.

Zuckerman’s time at UF will culminate in a solo exhibition at the University Gallery that will include an artist lecture and a public reception.
