Uncertain Codes is an essay in the form of an exhibition by the artist and writer Julien Bismuth. The project is organized around a specific constellation of artworks, texts, and documents that engage with opacity, specifically the inherent opacities and ambiguities of language. Artists and writers will include Guy de Cointet, Constance de Jong, Mirtha Demisarche, and Hannah Weiner, among others, as well as a selection of documents on the use of coded communication in recent history, from the use of railway codes by the Underground Railroad in the 19th century, to the coded communications of fireflies.

On view at the Gary R. Libby University Gallery through March 4, 2023.
