Dr. Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, Senior Historian and Acting Chief Curator, Director of Research, Publications, and Scholarly Programs, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery

This talk examines the engagement with history and contemporary events by two of the most prominent artists working today, Kara Walker and Carrie Mae Weems. Over the past three decades, each has sited their work at the juncture between the past and the present and shown explored ways that we are always beholden to our roots and the tenacious presence of transgenerational trauma.

This lecture is part of the series “Art’s Inclusive Histories: In Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage.”
