CORING

Join us Friday, February 28, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for the opening reception of “CORING,” a solo exhibition by Dr. Cori Matyas.

Artist Statement:

“What is at your core? A tree’s core? A core of ice? Reconnect to the space you inhabit. Is it safe? Inhale. Exhale. We don’t remember our first breath and can’t remember our last, but our actions in between matter. Melting ice will soon spread traces of the human epoch in their final release of latent energy. Is Earth’s fate sealed? As a geoscientist, I seek to convey knowledge about environment-human relationships through sculpture.

Support and protection in the face of changing conditions are themes in this show and trees feature prominently. They provide oxygen, water, nutrients, shelter, records of past climates, and a bridge from Earth to sky upon which to dream. Alterations to sunlight, air, and water triggered by human activities alters the growth patterns of trees as they struggle to breathe in warmer and drier conditions. As their colors and breath fade, so do ours.“
