The UF Center for Arts in Medicine online graduate program offers a Master's (MA) track and two Graduate Certificate (GC) tracks. Master of Arts in Arts in Medicine (MA)

The online Master of Arts (MA) in Arts in Medicine program’s comprehensive curriculum covers the practical skills and advanced knowledge necessary to safely and effectively engage the arts in healthcare and/or public health settings. Students will study with accomplished leaders at the forefront of this growing field, building on their previous arts or healthcare experience to develop professional skills in the discipline of arts in health. 

Virtually every form of artistic expression can be applied effectively in a healthcare environment. Healthcare institutions around the globe are providing patients with opportunities for creative engagement—including the visual arts, music, writing, dance, and theatre—and seeing positive results worthy of significant investment. The arts can also help protect and preserve the well-being of our communities by leveraging arts and cultural programming to—directly and indirectly—dress issues such as isolation, collective trauma, racism, and chronic disease. In the MA program, students will examine best practices and models for applying the arts in healthcare and community setting and will explore how their art form of choice can be the basis of an effective practice or program development.

While the course requirements can be completed entirely online, students will also identify and work directly in self-selected sites as a part of the program’s practicum component. Program faculty will teach students how to communicate and partner with healthcare or community site(s) near them to fulfill their hands-on experience, locally.

Graduate Certificate in Art in Medicine (GC AiM)

Use your creativity to transform the healthcare experience for patients and caregivers. Create better healthcare.

For those who may not be interested in pursuing a full master’s program, but would still like to learn how to effectively weave the arts into healthcare settings in their careers, UF also offers an online Graduate Certificate in Arts in Medicine. The certificate offers students access to the first four courses of the core curriculum of the master’s program and the opportunity to participate in the basic practicum requirement. This provides a high degree of flexibility to those looking for a more expedient path towards earning a valuable professional credential and developing their skills.

Graduate Certificate in Arts in Public Health (GC AiPH)

Use your creativity to transform communities from within, both culturally and socially. Create a healthier community.

The online Graduate Certificate in Arts in Public Health enables graduate students and professionals to engage the transformative power of the arts in public health settings.

Building from the same essential facets and learning objectives that shape our online programs in arts in medicine, this certificate program features a practicum requirement aimed specifically at providing students with first-hand experience in using the arts to promote individual and community health outside of healthcare settings. Throughout the program, students will examine the many ways in which the arts can have a positive impact on pressing public health issues such as racism, collective trauma, social isolation & exclusion, mental health, chronic diseases, and more. Students will also develop professional skills such as program planning, assessment, and interdisciplinary partnership and collaboration.

Graduates of the certificate program will be prepared to forge partnerships between arts professionals and public health, healthcare, human and social service practitioners. These partnerships and initiatives will use the arts—including drama, dance, murals, music, visual arts, performance art, and digital media—to transform public health. Bachelors + Online MA Combined Degree (Combined)

Qualifying majors: Music, Public Health, Biology, Microbio, Chemistry & Psychology 

For students who are completing their Bachelor's at UF in Music, Public Health, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry and Psychology we offer a combined degree program that allows you to complete your Bachelor's and start an Online Master's in Arts in Medicine at the same time. Students begin their graduate arts in medicine coursework during their junior or senior year and take an additional year to complete the online MA after finishing their respective Bachelor's program.
