Mitchell Estrin elected President-Elect of International Clarinet Association

By Brandon McKinley

The School of Music’s clarinet professor was elected to be the President-Elect of the International Clarinet Association (ICA).

Mitchell Estrin, professor of clarinet and music director and conductor of the University of Florida Clarinet Ensemble, will serve as President-Elect for two years, commencing in August. He will then become president in 2018.

“Having this position means I have a great opportunity to contribute to the present and future success of the organization,” he said.

The ICA is comprised of thousands of members who are clarinet performers, educators, students, hobbyists, vendors and industry leaders from around the world, according to Estrin.

The organization was founded in 1973, originally called the International Clarinet Society, and Estrin has been a member since 1975. He has performed, presented, adjudicated, served on committees, directed clarinet choirs and contributed articles for The Clarinet, the ICA’s official journal.

As President-Elect, Estrin said he will work closely with the current president Dr. Caroline Hartig, professor of clarinet at Ohio State University, on a variety of administrative, fiscal, strategic planning and logistical matters. He will also administrate and select repertoire for the annual Young Artist Competition.

“I look forward to the challenges ahead and am proud to represent the University of Florida as I become an officer of the ICA,” Estrin said.
