The Displaced Bow and APhISMs:Abstract Physically Informed Synthesis Methods for Composition and Interactive Performance | Georg Essl (Florida) |
Abstract: Physical Modeling has been around for a while and has been used for musical compositions and interactive performance. This paper explores new ways of looking at physical or physically informed synthesis methods in the light of recent developments in the field. In particular, Banded Waveguide Synthesis offers an intersection between spectral modeling and physical modeling that can be abstracted and seen as controlled compositional devices. Also, physical input usually drives interactive performances, which makes physical modeling an appealling synthesis method as the parameters are of this physical nature. This paper explores how abstractions of the synthesis algorithms formed by physical models can yield new and surprising results for composition and performance. The Displaced Bow is introduced as an algorithm for creating richly textured spectra. |
Using "Jitter" to search the "DarkMatter" for "StarDust" | Richard Boulanger, Greg Thompson, and Jana Saleh (Massachusetts) |
Abstract: "StarDust" and "DarkMatter" are two recent real-time multi-media compositions that use a Mathews' Radio Baton to trigger, transform, process, and spatialize a quartet of physical models in 4-channel surround using Max/MSP. These delicate audio textures are loosly synchronized with a quartet of Hubble Space Photos, and Saleh Earth Photos that are triggered, transformed, processed, and sequenced, from another Radio Baton driving Jitter. On a third PowerBook, an iBot FireWire Camera, runs a set of Jitter Algorithms that remember, ponder, wander, wonder, and transform the actions of the performers - literally reflecting on the performance as it happens. This presentation will feature an overview of the three systems designed for the compositions DarkMatter and StarDust: - RadioStatic, RadioJitter, and StarGazer with an emphasis on the use of Jitter, and the ways that The RadioSystems loosely connect and communicate with each other.
