School of Music Auditions
Entrance to the School of Music at the University of Florida requires an audition. It is strongly recommended that prospective students audition in person at one of the scheduled School of Music audition dates. Students living far from Gainesville may submit a high quality recording (CD is the preferred format), but a live audition is best.
Undergraduate Auditions: Undergraduate audition dates, applications and scheduling information can be found on the School of Music web site at the following location: Undergraduate Admissions. Your application must be completed before your audition date. Audition dates are requested on the School of Music Application/Information form. The date you request will be your audition date. You will be sent a schedule for the day shortly before the event. Notify Dr. Helton if you plan to apply.
Undergraduate Audition Requirements: The audition will consist of:
- Scales: All major scales and a full-range chromatic scale.
- Sight-Reading
- Two prepared pieces of your choosing. One should be slow and lyrical in order to demonstrate your tone and musical sensitivity. The other piece should be fast in order to demonstrate your technical command of the saxophone. You may choose any combination of solo works and/or etudes. Perform music with which you feel comfortable. The audition is not accompanied. Suggested repertoire: Heiden-Sonata, Glazunov-Concerto, Creston-Sonata, or other similar works.
- See Dr. Helton's guide to repertoire and college auditions at: http://www.arts.ufl.edu/music/saxophone/docs/auditionrepertoireguide.pdf
Graduate Auditions: Auditions for prospective graduate students are scheduled individually, and may take place anytime before the end of February. Early auditions (January) may receive priority for graduate assistantship funding. Contact Dr. Helton to arrange an audition time.
Graduate application information can be found on the School of Music web site at: Graduate Admissions. Your application must be complete by the time of your audition. Be sure all transcripts, references and other supporting material have reached the University by that date.
Graduate Audition Requirements: The audition will consist of two contrasting works of your choosing. Your program should include a variety of muical styles and demontrate the breadth of your technical and musical abilities. Perform music with which you feel comfortable. The audition is not accompanied. Suggested repertoire: Husa-Elegie et Rondeau, Dahl-Concerto, Ibert-Concertino, Dubios-Concerto, or other similar works.
