Small Project No. 3

    Follow these guidelines to complete
Small Project No. 3: Sample Based Composition.

REMEMBER: Follow all procedures as outlined in the web handouts "Getting Started, "Small Project No. 1," and "Small Project No. 2."

In this project the student will compose a short electroacoustic music composition using a "given" source sound file. The student will use the famous text from "I am Sitting In a Room" by Alvin Lucier. The sound file 'sitting.aif' is located on the desktop of the Mathews (ProTools) computer in the studio. The student is expected to extensively use ProTools to complete this project.

    Here are the project requirements:

      1. The composition should be 1-3 minutes long
      2. The composition should use 'sitting.aif' as the ONE AND ONLY sound source
      3. Use at least three plugins (audiosuits) from ProTools
      4. Use the fade in/out and cross fades function of ProTools
      5. Write a program note and composer biography

Here are some tips for composition:

      1. Think outside the program. For example,
      • Make multiple ProTools sessions
      • Use your favorite synthesis or audio manipulation software to process the sound
      • Use multiple programs (Protools, Reason, SoundHack, etc.)
      • weak the plug-in parameters in an unusual way
      • Think "composition first, tools second"; allow your artistic vision to guide you through the completion of this project
      2. One does not have to use the entire sound file. Only a fraction of the sound file could be used for the entire composition (e.g. "Come Out" and "It's Gonna Rain" by Steve Reich or any of the "text-sound" compositions of Swedish composers)

      3. In the case of 'sitting.aif,' the text itself might suggest the compositional form/structure. Listen to the text carefully and try to "paint" the words with creative signal processing.

      4. Mixing is a crucial part of electroacoustic music composition. Be extra careful in balancing levels and placing the sounds within the stereo field; perhaps you might even sonically suggest a two-dimensional plane in which the sounds exist through the use of panning, application of reverberation and/or delay, and equalization (EQ).

      5. BACK UP your files/work often (unless you enjoy doing your work multiple times)!

Please turn in an Audio CD of your work
