* John Young's appearance at FEMF10 made possible through the assistance of Creative New Zealand and De Montfort University.
New Zealand electroacoustic music had its beginnings in the early 1960s when, relatively late in life, the composer Douglas Lilburn began working exclusively in this medium. One of the defining aspirations of Lilburn's work was to find a sound-world which might resonate more distinctively with his immediate environment Š to fashion a voice for a 'new' world detached from 'old' instrumental practice and culture. It was this which gave the initial impetus for the development of electroacoustic music in New Zealand a very strong and deep foundation. Yet, perhaps ironically, electroacoustic music has continued to develop as one of the new globalizing forces in music‹as shared technological issues are dealt with at the speed of the internet. This selection of music represents, then, the confluence of these two quite different aspects of the electroacoustc tradition in New Zealand‹the direct use of environmental and original cultural sources, and the growing immediacy with which the influence of new technologies and musical thinking is absorbed and acted upon.

Concert V

The above concert is a cooperative venture between the electronic music studio of the University of Florida (FEMS - USA) and the DeGeM (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Elektonische Musik). The idea of James Paul Sain (University of Florida) and Javier Alejandro Garavaglia (ICEM, GNMR, DeGeM), this concert will feature works composed in Germany. We believe that this kind of cooperation is not only a vehicle to present new music but also will encourage people of different countries and cultures to get to know each other much better.

* Latin American participation during FEMF10 is supported in part by the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies. The "Sonidos y Visiones del Sur" CD presentation comes out as a result of a cooperative venture between the UNLa (Universidad Nacional de Lanus) Audiovision Master Degree Career, directed by Lic. Susana Espinosa, and the Florida Electroacoustic Music Studio at the University of Florida. Additional support for the presentation of this CD during the 10th Annual Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival was provided by the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. In December 1999 the UNLa and the Universidad de La Serena-Chile, initiated the production of a CD exclusively devoted to electroacoustic music from Argentina and Chile. This effort focuses on the diffusion of our composers' and researchers' work. Even though Chile and Argentina were the first countries in South America to develop research projects in electroacoustic music, this CD project was accomplished without special government aid or allowances. Four composers from Argentina and three from Chile, all of them are internationally well known and living, teaching, and working in production and research in their countries, are included in the CD.
