About our program

Welcome to the University of Florida School of Music Composition Studies website. Our unique program emphasizes experimentation and engagement with contemporary issues such as technology, critical theory, polystylism, and interdisciplinarity. Composition degrees are available through the Ph.D. and several fellowships and assistantships are available to qualified applicants. Students work with a core faculty of composers including Paul Koonce, Paul Richards, and James Paul Sain.

Our department's activities are predominantly student-led, allowing ample opportunities to gain experience producing concerts and hosting guest artists relevant to student interests. Events are produced and funded by our student chapter of the Society of Composers Inc. (UF-SCI) and the Sonic Computing Organization (.SCO). In addition, the Nuclear Music Ensemble presents concerts of contemporary music by established composers.
