Harmony Initiative

School of Music Harmony Initiative

As we know, Harmony is a term associated not only with musical structure, but also interpersonal congruity and collaboration. In pursuit of the utmost musical adaptability and professional readiness, the School of Music Harmony Initiative advances creative and scholarly interests that significantly augment the work being done within our teaching studios, classrooms and on our concert stages. Indeed, the Harmony Initiative promotes fluency in a broad array of musical traditions beyond those already familiar—Mozart to Miles Davis; Beethoven to Brazilian Folk; Stravinsky to Stevie Ray Vaughan to Stevie Wonder! Harmony with these and other traditions is critical to the development of the dynamic, adaptable musician, whether performer or scholar.

The Initiative encourages such things as:

  • Music for study and performance
  • Classroom teaching materials
  • Scholarly research materials
  • Support for special events
  • Guest speakers, performers, composers, conductors
  • Support for community engagement—public school performances, presentations, etc.

Students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to submit proposals for Harmony Initiative support directly to the  School of Music director.
